News and Notes

This week is Annual Spirit Week at Pinecrest School! During Spirit Week, students, faculty, and staff can choose to participate by wearing different attire to school, depending on the day's theme. An orange flyer was sent home last week with the same details as below:

  • Thursday, May 17: Sports Attire/Team Day – represent your favorite sport(s) and/or team(s) (Note: 4th-6th grade on a field trip this day and can dress in sports theme not in Pinecrest shirts)
  • Friday, May 18: Pinecrest Spirit Day – wear your Pinecrest spirit attire (Note: 2nd/3rd grade on a field trip this day and are being asked to wear Pinecrest 60 blue shirts)

The next Pinecrest Pizza Friday (PPF) is this Friday, May 18. Remember, the sign-up link closes at 2PM the day before.

Save the date! We have added a Chipotle fundraiser to our calendar for Monday, May 21, from 5-9 p.m. at the Chipotle in Mosaic - 8191 Strawberry Lane, Falls Church, VA 22042. We will be sending out a flyer in advance of the 21st that must be shown in hard copy or on a smartphone to the cashier when you check out. If we hit $300 in sales, Pinecrest will receive 50 percent of that. Online orders will not count towards our total, and gift purchases also do not count.A white flyer is coming home to you today – this must be shown either in hard copy or on your phone (we will send an electronic version and post it on Facebook prior to Monday) when you order at Chipotle.

Our annual author showcase afternoons will be as follows in the classrooms:

  • Monday, May 21 – Grade 1 – 3-3:35 p.m.
  • Tuesday, May 22 – Grade 2/3 – 3-3:35 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 23 – Grade 4 – 3-3:35 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 24 – Grade 5/6 – 3-3:35 p.m.

The teachers look forward to the opportunity for the children to share their writing from throughout the school year with parents and we look forward to seeing you there!

K-Kids: Elections for next year's K-Kids officers will be held at our next meeting on Tuesday, May 22. This was discussed at the meeting yesterday. Any returning K-Kids members can run for office with the exception of those who have only been in K-Kids for one year should not run for president. Students can only run for one position each year. At yesterday’s meeting, we talked a little about each officer position and the duties. Anyone planning to run for office should prepare a brief speech (about 1 minute) about why s/he wants to run to share with the group next week. All current K-Kids members present that day will be able to vote in the elections.

Our Annual Meeting is next Wednesday, May 23 at 7 p.m. at Glory Days at Barcroft Plaza on Columbia Pike in Falls Church. Updates will be provided as well as completing the election of the 2018-19 Board of Directors, in accordance with the school’s bylaws. Proxy ballots went out last week. If you do not plan to attend the annual meeting, please return your ballot by Wednesday morning, May 23 to the office. You can turn in your ballot ahead of time and still attend the annual meeting. Holding the annual meeting at Glory Days is a first but the Board thought it would be fun. And remember if you buy dinner or drinks at the annual meeting turn in your itemized receipts (the receipts that list all your purchases, not the credit card receipts), Glory Days will donate a percentage of what we spend to Pinecrest as part of their school fundraising program through June 6. The Annual Meeting is geared towards parents and staff (no children).

Friday, May 25, is a K-6 half day with dismissal for all students at 12:05 p.m. Mid-day dismissal on this day will be busier than usual. After-care is offered as usual for preschool and no sign-up is needed. If you need to use K-6 after-care, please sign up here.

Our K-Kids Club is running a big food drive – particularly collecting food for what Food for Others calls Power Packs. These are Ziploc bags of various food items that are sent home with local children who do not have enough food to eat on the weekends or during school breaks. This kind of project is one of my favorite: kids truly helping kids, and I hope everyone in our school community will participate. A teal flyer went home recently with the specifics of what is needed. K-Kids chose a goal of 75 packs and, together, we can hit that. You can also find the list of suggested items on page 6 (it says Suggested Foods at the top) of this PDF. K-Kids members will put together the packs on Wednesday afternoon, May 30, so all donations should come in before then. Please think about what you can contribute and thanks to those who have already brought in donations!. Every gift no matter how small will help our K-Kids reach their goal and more importantly will help local children eat.

K-6 Field Day is on Wednesday, June 6. This is a GREAT day! This is the last day of school with 12:05 p.m. dismissal for all and there is no after-care afterwards. (We will have before-care that morning as usual.) We need parent volunteers for Field Day - 6 for the student teams, 8 for the stations and events, and 2-4 for food preparation. Please think about your time availability and sign up to help here. As soon as we get the six volunteers for the children’s teams, we can put all of the Field Day information out to all.

Join us after K-6 Field Day for an end of year celebration at Glory Days in Barcroft Plaza on Columbia Pike in Falls Church! This is a chance to come together with friends and family to celebrate a great year in community at Pinecrest! Be sure to save your itemized receipts (these are the receipts that list all of your purchases, not the credit card slip you sign) and submit them after your meal for our fundraiser. (Pinecrest receives 10% back from your entire order at Glory Days through June 6.) Support our school while we celebrate the end of the school year with friends - WIN-WIN! We hope to see you there starting at 12:15!

When you dine at any Glory Days Grill location between now and June 6, Glory Days will contribute 10 percent of the total food and beverages purchased to Pinecrest. You must ask your server for the itemized copy of your receipt (not the credit card receipt - the one that shows all the items that you purchased) and then submit that receipt to Pinecrest. We do need the actual receipt (scans not accepted). You can find a Glory Days location here. The closest one to Pinecrest is a new one that just opened on Columbia Pike in Falls Church! A flyer on this went home in last week's Wednesday Envelopes. Please share this with local family, friends and neighbors who may patronize Glory Days and also want to support Pinecrest. Our Pinecrest Run Club will be running as a group at a local 5K in June. A couple of families have asked us which one so they can also participate. Here are all of the details: Sun., June 10, 8AM start time, at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA 22035. Each family is responsible for registering its own participants at this link - it is $30/person through May 18. Additional race details can be found here. More details will follow about the Pinecrest plan to meet up etc. If you register, please let me know.

Our recent experience with moving inspired us to create an Amazon Wish List for anyone who is so inclined. Any items purchased from the list would be tax-deductible donations to our school. The list will be updated regularly as different needs and wants arise. Thank you to those who have already sent us gifts!

As part of our 60th anniversary celebration, we are collecting 60 reasons why we love Pinecrest School all throughout this school year! You and/or your child(ren) can submit responses here. Thanks to the responses we have already - it is awesome to read through them.

Our Annual Fund Campaign is in progress and will go through August 31, 2018. Our goal is to raise $10,000 and achieve 100% current parent and staff participation, although we have many alumni families and grandparents who give generously each year as well. All independent schools and non-profits run annual fund campaigns each year. You can donate online here. The importance of Pinecrest Annual Fund cannot be overstated; it helps us close the gap between tuition and the actual operating costs of the school and is completely separate from the capital campaign which is for the new lower school building. Thank you to the many families and staff who have already given!

June Care

We are offering June care from Monday-Friday, June 11-15. This is part of the period of time between the K-6 last day of school and the first day of summer camp. (Note that there is more of a gap for preschoolers as the preschool last day of school is June 1 and June Care does not begin until June 11. All of these dates were on our original calendar.) The June Care registration link is now open. You can sign up for all 5 days or pick and choose what you need per day. The price will increase after May 25.

Summer Camp – Pinecrest Pavilion

We are running 9 weeks of camp this summer beginning Monday, June 18 and ending Friday, August 17, and all details are on the website here. Registration is now open to the public with no password needed. Here is the registration link.

Celebrations/Appreciations

I’ve had the chance to look through many of the cards and notes sent to all of the teachers last week. WOW! What beautiful words and, more importantly, I LOVE that you and your children took time out of your busy schedules to complete this exercise for us. I think this is a very valuable life lesson – the idea of expressing gratitude – and I really think it is awesome that so many families participated in this last week. I urge you to keep it going all through the year for all of the people who are special to you and your children. The cards we received were all so creative and special – the words, the letters, the drawings, the stickers and everything in between. I loved all of my notes and cards, and I loved even more looking through the other cards that the teachers received – very heartwarming and uplifting. Thank you all. This is community, for sure. ☺

Whenever there are relevant speakers or programs coming to our area (or accessible online), we often share that information if we think the message is a match with the Pinecrest School message and philosophy and/or we think parents might be interested in attending and/or participating. To that end, I want to share two upcoming events as FYI:

Animals and Emotions Family Yoga

Spring is a time when we see new baby animals at the farm and zoo – what better time to do animal yoga! Animals have a unique association with emotions for many people, and yoga presents a great opportunity to explore our emotions through animal poses. The next time you’re feeling a little angry, try lion pose to get that anger out. If you’re overly excited, take gorilla pose to calm down. Especially for children, who are still learning to identify and process their emotions, animal yoga offers a safe and fun avenue to explore those emotions and learn to effectively express them! *Bring your favorite stuffed animal to share yoga with us!
